Mzansi’s entertainment industry was forever changed when Katlego ‘K2’ Mabusela decided to enter Big Brother Mzansi Double Trouble competition. His charm, looks and talent won the hearts of numerous South Africans who became stans at a blink of an eye. K2 confesses that he was bit by the rap bug (it exists) at a tender age and has honed his skill ever since. Cava why you should bet on this lepara to succeed.
QuenchSA: Has the adoration you’ve received from fans and its sheer number come as a surprise to you?
K2: Absolutely. I say that because of the type of love we get. I feel like they appreciate what we went through, going to big brother, trying to get into the platform, trying to get the exposure. Although the fan base is bigger than I expected who am I to complain.
QuenchSA: How do you deal with the sudden level of scrutiny in your life?
K2: Honestly, I went to go do this reality show; I had expected my life to change so I would say it’s something that was expected. For me it’s life, it doesn’t really worry me. What worries me is my private life is private. What goes on between me and Blue is between me and Blue. If the media wants to make up stuff its fine, as long as I know the truth nothing can hurt me.
QuenchSA: Was there ever a time in the BB House where it got personal with anyone?
K2: A reality show like Big Brother is unlike any other, mentally you had to be prepared for that, it was a test of character. Whether you could handle the pressure. For me maturity-wise it brought a lot of growth as well. Its a challenge but you gain normality in it.
QuenchSA: Do you agree that your relationship with Blue might be the most influential relationship amongst the youth?
K2: That’s a very touchy one, I don’t know, I’ve never said I was an influence but I feel like it’s too early to say.
QuenchSA: Please tell us about your music journey. Was it always your passion?
K2: Rapping is actually my favourite thing to do, it’s my comfort zone, when I’m writing I’m in my Chi. The first time I wrote a rap I was 14 years old and I never looked back. I’m blessed to be doing what I love to do, being recognized for it and making a living out of it.
QuenchSA: Did the reception of your first single Lepara come as a surprise?
K2: I’ve always had the total confidence in my ability to rap. When I rap, I rap for people. As for Lepara, I told people they should expect a single and I was hoping, it wasn’t something i wrote before the show, i wrote it after the show. I told people they should expect a single and I delivered so for me its a good feeling.
QuenchSA: When can we expect the next single?
K2: I like to surprise people, I don’t want to give things away, I’m working hard. Right now I’m still pushing Lepara, its doing quite well, getting airplay and still doing some gigs. But you can expect a couple of single before the year ends maybe even a remix to Lepara.
QuenchSA: And the album?
K2: I’m working on the album; I don’t have a release date yet.
QuenchSA: What else is K2 working on?
K2: Actually, there was a poll of who KidX should collaborate with and people voted for me and now we currently in talks. It’s the outcome of the work you put in. Hard work pays off, I’m working. It’s still early days though.
