With the Big Brother Mzansi auditions under way, we talk to last year’s winner, Mandla Hlatshwayo.
It’s a year since Big Brother Mzansi winner, Mandla Hlatshwayo, entered the show. As the new season is upon us, we tracked him down to find out how he has been living after scooping the R1 million prize.
“I will not deny, after leaving the show my life turned for the best. It changed drastically and I am in a much better place now,” he said.
Yet, for him the high life did not start after he won the competition, but when he entered the Big Brother Mzansi house.
“Everyone knows my township background so it was a whole different experience when I walked into that house which had beautiful stuff. I mean, the food alone was sometimes stuff that I had never eaten before. It was the beginning of great things. Now, after winning, I have had opportunities to travel to the various provinces, a thing I had not done before.”
With a cool million in his bank account, Hlatshwayo knew that he had to make that newfound wealth count for something.
“As I am speaking to you I am stepping into a house that I just bought. It is the beginning of a business where I buy and sell houses. So that is what I am busy with right now,” he revealed.
And if you are wondering what happened to his in-house lover Lexi, from Big Brother Mzansi, you might be happy to know that the flame is still burning.
“We are still together. We have a reality show coming up, but I am not at liberty to talk about it yet because it is still in production,” he said.
Giving some advice to the people who want to be on the show this season, Hlatshwayo kept it simple, alluding to the fact that honesty gets a contestant further in the game.
“I’d say your personality will get you very far. I think that’s what they are looking for. And if you make it onto the show, just go and have fun and not think too much about winning the money. If your personality got you in, then it will take you far once you are in the competition,” he explained.
With the class of 2014 all gone now, one has to wonder if the former contestants are still in touch or if their friendships ended when we saw the final credits of the show.
“We have a Whatsapp group so we keep in touch. The only people who are not in the group are Mzamo, Iris and Kat, for their own personal reasons,” he said.
Outside of selling houses, Hlatshwayo has another avenue from which he makes a living and which also preserves his celebrity status.
“I get a lot of invites to MC at DStv or Multichoice events. Sometimes it is just to show up and enjoy myself. It is all to do with the relationship that I have formed with them,” he said.
While we wait for Hlatshwayo and Lexi’s reality show, the new season of Big Brother Mzansi draws closer.
